Best Beat ‘Em Up Games for iOS (iPhone, iPad)

Get in the ring with these knockout fighting games for iPhone.

This side-scrolling game is a bit of an odd mix in tone, because its situations and characters are juvenile but sometimes the language is mature. You shouldn’t let the odd potty mouth experience put you off, though, especially if you’re after something less serious than Street Fighter. It’s a fun game to play and it provides a decent challenge as you master the gesture-based martial arts moves and progress up through the difficulty levels.

Download this virtual sensei and you’ll quickly develop fingers of fury.

Street Fighter IV

In porting this game, Capcom has tried extremely hard to maintain the arcade experience that helped to make the series so popular. Accordingly, the smooth animation matches the original’s resolution. Together with the energetic soundtrack and virtual joystick, however, this helps adds authenticity. It takes time to master the multiple movements available from the controls but this only helps to increase the fun.

Fans of this brawling franchise should definitely get a kick out of this faithful port.

Street Fighter X Tekken Mobile

You’d expect this mash-up of the two top fighting franchises to produce a smackdown gaming experience. Basically Street Fighter IV with embellishments, it will definitely test your mettle whether you play solo or against other people using Bluetooth or Wi-Fi. If you’re not familiar with the originals, though, you might find the fast action and technicolour dressing a bit manic.

Although designed for mobile devices, this replicates its inspirations’ mad mixture of energy and colour.

Super KO Boxing 2

As you would probably guess from the name, this game requires you to put your fists up if you want to win. Thankfully, it’s not a bruising encounter due to easy controls that let you dodge with one thumb and punch with the other. Also, if you just like playing purely for fun, this is an app that doesn’t take itself too seriously, as evidenced by your opponents, which include at least one four-armed alien.

This lacks the punch of more realistic beat’em ups but it’s gleefully entertaining.

Combo Crew

In this game you play as one of several revered fighters that have been captured by the treacherous Mr Boss. Unsurprisingly, your escape involves fighting. You attack by swiping over opponents rather than moving your character directly. Touchscreen controls are used to provide a variety of special moves and the firm sound of fist-on-flesh makes every victory particularly sweet.

The characters are small but you make up for this by laying down big punches.
